Inclusive Employment

At Foreword Coffee, inclusive employment begins before a person is hired. We design our hiring, training, and workplace support around the belief that everyone can grow when given the right environment, expectations, and opportunities. Guided by patience, empathy, and creativity, we support team members to enter work, learn at their own pace, build confidence, develop skills, and progress through pathways that reflect their strengths and readiness.

Inclusive Hiring Process

Inclusive Hiring Process

Inclusive Hiring Process

We focus on a person’s potential to contribute meaningfully. Our hiring process considers each candidate’s attitude, abilities, support needs, and readiness for work. Where needed, we work with caregivers, job coaches, and partners to better understand how each person can be supported to succeed in the workplace.

Person-Centred Job Fit

Person-Centred Job Fit

Everyone begins their work journey differently. We take time to understand each person’s strengths, learning pace, and support needs when matching them to suitable tasks. The first three months are a probationary and learning period, where new employees build the skills, routines, and confidence needed to contribute meaningfully. They start with tasks they can manage, then gradually grow towards greater independence, responsibility, and confidence at work.

Patience, Empathy & Creativity

Patience, Empathy & Creativity

Our workplace culture is guided by patience, empathy, and creativity. We recognise that people learn and progress at different speeds, so our teams practise patience, seek to understand challenges from the employee’s perspective, and find creative ways to overcome barriers at work. This framework helps us support improvement without losing sight of dignity and respect.

4

Clear Communication

Clear Communication

Communication is a key part of inclusion. Because employees may differ in language, cognitive abilities, and communication styles, we strive to keep instructions clear, check for understanding, and adapt how messages are shared. This may include shorter instructions, visual cues, repeated practice, sign language, or other ways to ensure that the intended message is understood.

Training for Capability and Capacity

Training for Capability and Capacity

Training for Capability and Capacity

We support employees to grow in both capability and capacity. Capability refers to learning new skills, such as preparing espresso, cashiering, food preparation, or coffee roasting. Capacity refers to becoming faster, more accurate, and more confident over time. Through training, practice, and job redesign, employees are supported to grow at a pace that is realistic and meaningful.

Career Pathways

Career Pathways

Growth at Foreword Coffee is not linear. Employees may start as trainees, move into café operations, support roasting, become trainers, take on leadership responsibilities, or even explore office-based roles. Progression is assessed through attitude, ability, and availability, recognising that each person grows differently and may have different aspirations for work and life.

Inclusive Training & Consultancy

Supported by the SG Enable training grant, Foreword Coffee conducts training programmes that equip persons with disabilities with practical skills for work. Beyond training, we also support organisations through consultancy, helping them design more inclusive workplaces, improve job fit, adapt work processes, and build the confidence to hire, train, and support persons with disabilities meaningfully.
